Recognizing 100 Years of Insulin

2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin by Canadian doctors FJ Banting and JJR Macleod.  Huge strides in our understanding of diabetes and treatment options have been made since insulin was first discovered in 1921, yet there continues to be an increasing prevalence of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes around the world. 

The government of Canada with a host of other organizations both national and international has launched : 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes.  The goal of this campaign is to encourage research, treatment and our understanding of diabetes to reverse this upward trajectory of the disease and reduce its significant impact on  individuals, families and communities.  New devices are emerging using advances in technology to create improved artificial pancreas systems, better blood sugar monitoring equipment, and better insulin and medication products…. but still no cure.

Though there has been so much progress in managing Diabetes, it continues to be a serious, life altering disease.  Diabetes Canada launched a campaign in January 2021 called:  We Can’t Wait Another 100 Years To End Diabetes.  The goal is to address the urgency of finding a cure for diabetes and hopes to foster increased awareness and research funding to reduce the impact diabetes has on people in Canada and around the world.
